What the Forest Heard

Arden Vale is ten years old and can take anything apart. In her grandfather’s attic she finds a machine that does not make maps. It listens. And the first thing she hears the forest say is a name.

Hollis.

Over and over, patient as rain, the way you say a name when nobody has answered for thirty years.

There is a boy under the Forgotten Hollow who heard the forest before anyone else did, and told people, and was sent away for it. He is not a monster. He pulls a five-year-old out of the water and gives him bread. He is also killing the tree, and he knows it, and he will not stop.

The forest can let him go. Somebody has to ask. And whoever asks has to give up their own hearing, for good — and has to ask before he says he is sorry.

Because waiting for the apology makes it a trade.
